Frequently Asked Questions
Your Guide to Oud, Fragrance Traditions, and the UDSI Experience
What Is Oud?
Oud, also known as agarwood, is one of the world’s most precious natural fragrances. It is derived from the heartwood of Aquilaria trees that have become infected with a specific type of mold, causing the wood to produce a dark, resinous core. This rare resin is highly valued for its deep, woody aroma and complex, luxurious scent profile. Oud has been treasured for centuries across the Middle East, South Asia, and beyond, for both spiritual rituals and personal indulgence.
How Do I Burn Oud Properly?
To enjoy the full depth of oud’s aroma, it’s important to burn it gently:
1. Choose a Burner: Use our UDSI Dual Purpose Oud Burner, designed for both traditional (charcoal) and modern (candle) methods.
2. Select Your Heat Source:
- Charcoal Method: Light a charcoal disc and allow it to heat until fully grey (approx. 5–10 minutes).
- Candle Method: Place a tea light in the burner’s base for a low-smoke, slow-release aroma.
3. Add a Small Piece of Oud: Use UDSI tongs to place the oud on the heated surface. Let the gentle heat activate the rich, complex scent.
4. Enjoy the Fragrance: Allow the aroma to unfold gradually, filling your space with warmth, depth, and elegance.
What’s the Difference Between Oud and Bakhoor?
While both are used in incense rituals, oud and bakhoor are distinctly different:
- Oud is the pure resinous wood itself, natural, unblended, and prized for its intense, luxurious scent.
- Bakhoor is a fragrant blend of oud, wood chips, oils, and resins. It often includes oud as an ingredient but is more of a composed, aromatic mix.
At UDSI, we offer both so you can experience oud in its purest form or as part of a rich, curated scent blend.
Can Oud Be Used Daily?
Yes — oud can be used as part of your daily ritual, especially in small amounts using a candle or low-heat burner. Many of our customers enjoy burning oud while meditating, relaxing, or preparing their home for guests. It creates an instantly calming and luxurious atmosphere.
Is Oud Safe to Burn Indoors?
When used in moderation and with proper ventilation, oud is safe to enjoy indoors. Our dual - purpose burner offers a candle-burning method that produces minimal smoke, ideal for enclosed spaces and everyday use.
Why Is Oud So Expensive?
Oud is often called “liquid gold” and for good reason. Its high price reflects:
- Scarcity: Only certain trees produce oud, and even fewer contain resin-rich heartwood.
- Harvesting Difficulty: Extracting oud is a labor-intensive and delicate process.
- Aging & Quality: Like fine wine, oud becomes more aromatic and valuable with age.
At UDSI, we source authentic, high-grade oud that meets our standards of purity, richness, and luxury.
How Do I Store Oud?
To preserve your oud:
- Store it in its original airtight container
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and moisture
- Use clean hands or tools when handling
Proper storage ensures your oud retains its natural oils and aromatic potency over time.
Is Oud Just for Special Occasions?
Traditionally, oud was reserved for religious ceremonies, weddings, and formal gatherings. Today, however, it’s increasingly used to elevate everyday moments. Whether you're enjoying quiet reflection, entertaining guests, or setting the tone for your space, oud turns ordinary into exceptional.
